October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Help Star Motors in supporting research efforts to help Put the Brakes on Cancer.
BRAKES FOR BREASTS is a national promotion where participating automotive service facilities provide free brake pads to customers, then donate 10% of the brake service directly to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund. There are many great organizations out there, yet in reality less than 10% goes to the actual cure. Cleveland Clinic is focused on prevention.
Let’s band together and help put the brakes on Breast Cancer! Please pass the word along to your friends. See the enclosed flyer for details.

Native Californian, Donna Butnik, has been inspiring others with her unique art for over forty years. Star Motors is thrilled to host her works in the shop gallery. From oil and watercolor, stained glass, and mask making to paper maché, murals, pottery, silk screens (serigraphs) and animation, Butnik has delighted art lovers and the community at large with her melodic style of art. Her favorite method of painting and teaching is the drip method using enamel house paints, originally inspired by Jackson Pollack, using house paints with sticks to drip on the canvass.
Butnik’s painting techniques enable her to reach subconscious levels of imagery. She achieves this effect by dripping the paint on, rolling it around and developing the images that emerge. Her paintings and silk screens of still life’s, landscapes and people are all extensions of her unique and colorful view of this world.
“My inspiration is drawn from my dreams, models and nature surrounding me. My best creations are when the painting paints itself. I just stand out of the way; and let the drips turn into a visual melody.”
Come by Star Motors’ Gallery to enjoy the paintings and perhaps take one home!

Rachet+Wrench, the industry’s leading resource for strategies and inspiration for auto care success, featured Star Motors recently in an examination of how and why we have come to be recognized by many as Orange County’s most “community-centric” auto repair shop! Community is important to the entire team at Star Motors, second only (perhaps) to delivering the consistent world-class customer service that we are famous for!
Why pay dealership service prices?
When husband-and-wife team Chris Knuth and Emma Silvera purchased Star Motors in 2008, they had a distinct vision for their shop. While the existing shop had a solid foundation with happy customers, Knuth and Silvera wanted to take Star Motors to the next level by making it part of the community. Through a combination of community events, marketing and selective hiring and leadership practices, the pair has created a shop that is not only profitable, but also memorable.
Star Motors owners Chris Knuth and Emma Silvera bring a mixture of technical, entrepreneurial and community-service backgrounds to Star. Photo by Christian Kaysen
CHRIS KNUTH: Emma and I both come from very different backgrounds. I was a technician and worked for several independent shops. I was in transition and we ended up taking over a little two-bay shop at a local gas station on a week-by-week basis. Then, through the grapevine, a gentleman called us who had a BMW/Mercedes repair shop who wanted to retire and we ended up buying his business from him.
ES: My background is doing a lot of community service. I’ve been a teacher and I’ve worked in different community centers. But I’m an entrepreneur at heart. Taking over the shop was a learning curve, but Chris’ technical experience and my experience with different nonprofit organizations and building programs blended very well. Together, we were able to not just have a shop, but make it very unique.
CK: We definitely had our own ideas about how we wanted our business to look. The biggest piece we wanted to change was that the shop wasn’t well known in the community. I think we took the business from off-the-beaten-path to more into the public view. I think we’re more top of mind now.
ES: I just really think having a sense of community is really important. Knowing who is in your community and working together is so important for building relationships. In this day and age, it’s so easy for things to be robotic. We want people to have that feeling of warmth and comfort that I think is missing from businesses nowadays.
I like to look at a variety of different causes. We got out there and we try to figure out what’s going to make the biggest difference in the community. We have also helped out different high schools, we have participated in the local parades and decorated floats.
Star Motors emphasizes community involvement. One of its initiatives involves a partnership with a local art gallery to display paintings in its lobby. Photo by Christian Kaysen
We also incorporate the art gallery in our other events. We hold a monthly women’s car care event. We invite women (and men, actually) to the shop and we set up four different stations. One is about computers and your vehicle, another is about tires, one about fluids in your cars, and we have one station where they can ask the tech anything they want. We have food, raffle prizes, chair massages, mimosas and goodie bags.
We pick local charities but there are certain times of the year where we will branch out and do a national fundraising campaign, like the Brake for Breasts campaign. To me, that was a no-brainer because 100 percent of the money donated is going to the research.
CK: I love supporting all the things that we do. I think it’s really neat to make our business not all about auto repair. We’ve found that these kind of events are really important for our clientele. I think that’s one of the things that we’ve created here: a family atmosphere where our clients come in and know everyone who works here.
We focus our marketing efforts to continue this atmosphere. We send out a monthly print and email newsletter. In our print newsletter, we feature one employee every month. It gives our clients a chance to look at their more human side. We touch our clients in a lot of different ways, but our overarching messages are about community, teamwork and how grateful we are for our clients.
ES: Facebook is an important part of this. We’ll have fun giveaways, like guess the age of an employee and get a free oil change or movie passes. In November we get a giant pumpkin and have customers guess the weight, or in March we do a March Madness giveaway. We try to change it up so there’s something fun for our clients. It doesn’t have to be about cars all the time.
CK: We hire employees that have the same mindset. They need to really enjoy being with people and getting to know the customer more than just dropping off their car. I think finding those employees starts with the recruiting materials we put out here.
Community: The Star Motors team shares a customer-conscious mindset. Photo by Christian Kaysen
What I also like to do is ask that when they send their résumé in, they include a short paragraph about why they’re a great fit for this position. That works really well because it checks to see if people are listening and following directions and you can see where their head is at too.
Another thing that works out really nicely is that Emma and I team up for interviews. We both have a different perspective. She sees things that I don’t see, and I see things she doesn’t. We’ll also have candidates interview with our employees. So it’s six or seven people’s minds coming together to make a decision, rather than just one or two of us.
We also have weekly staff meetings every Tuesday. We cater in lunch for those meetings. It’s a good opportunity for us to talk about wins we had the week before, challenges, and our goals for sales, customer retention and quality. We always open the meetings up to comments and people just throw things out there.
ES: It gives all the employees buy-in to the company. We have very specific goals for our company but we also always want our employees to have personal goals, too, and helping them achieve those is important to us.
Star Motors has teamed up with the Mission Fine Art Gallery of San Juan Capistrano to present: Great Art, Wine and Cars: Making the World a Better Place, a Star Motors art show benefit.

During Star Motors’ Art Show and 5th anniversary celebration, local artists from the Gallery will show their work in a unique setting. Twenty-percent of the proceeds from art sales will benefit Laura’s House, a local women’s shelter.
Star Motors has built a solid reputation for both outstanding quality work and customer service. But, it’s also known for giving back to the community. Being an integral part of the fabric of South Orange County is important to owners Emma Silvera and Chris Knuth.
“Our business is not all about auto repair. We’ve found that community events are really important for our clientele. I think that’s one of the things that we’ve created here: a family atmosphere where our clients come in and know everyone who works here,” Knuth said.
Supporting victims of domestic violence while enhancing the local arts is a natural fit for the values of Star Motors as a local business tied to the public. “I think having a sense of community is really important. Knowing who is in your community and working together is crucial for building relationships,” Silvera said. “In this day and age, it’s so easy for things to be robotic. We want people to have that feeling of warmth and comfort that I think is missing from businesses nowadays.”
While Star Motors has supported countless causes and organizations over the last five years, Laura’s House is the beneficiary of 20% of the proceeds from art sales during the anniversary party.
Laura’s House provides unparalleled domestic violence-related services to the 915,000 residents of Orange County, California and beyond. Over the past eighteen years, Laura’s House has provided shelter and support services to more than 3,488 battered women and children and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 40,305 persons.
Come and enjoy a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres while touring the workshop and viewing art during the anniversary party.
This will be a casual, fun and informative event you won’t want to miss! Join us to help change the world and celebrate local business and art at the same time. RSVP by either calling Star Motors at: 949.443.1970 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and include your first and last name.
This year, once again, Star Motors is proud to be a part of the U.S. Marine Corps Annual Toys for Tots OC Campaign. Help us spread the message of hope to needy youngsters in our community.
Through its donations, the Marine Corps Reserve and Toys for Tots have provided toys to millions of children since 1947.
Between now and December 20th, drop off new, unwrapped toys to Star Motors.
Please join with Star Motors to support this worthy charity and put a HUGE SMILE on a child’s face!
Toys for Tots OC is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major William L. Hendricks.
As of 2013, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed nearly six hundred million toys.
A multiple award-winning, family-owned and operated small business, Star Motors recently joined with over 60 automotive shops across America to raise money for preventative research and put the Brakes on Breast Cancer with Free Brake month.
The Brakes For Breasts Free Brake Month fundraiser was different from many breast cancer fundraising campaigns which ran during October because funds raised by these independently owned auto repair shops went directly to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund in order to fund research of a vaccine that could lead to a cure for breast cancer, not just treatments for the disease.
In other words 100% of the proceeds went directly to the Cleveland Clinic and zero percent of these donated profits were lost to any type of marketing and administrative fees. Program founder, Leigh Anne Best, felt it important to create a program where the participating shops could raise money for an organization working on a breast cancer vaccine cure, allowing each shop (and its customers) to see the direct impact of all funds raised.
This year marked the third year for the Free Brake Month Breaks For Breasts fundraiser. It was launched in 2011 by two women, Leigh Anne Best of Mighty Auto Pro in Medina, OH and Laura Frank of Royal Car Care & Tire Center in Brunswick, OH. Of the past two years fundraising successes and this year’s enrollment jump, Leigh Anne Best announced at
the start …
“The third time is a charm! Our first year (2010), we raised $10k with 5 shops. In 2012 we asked our fellow independently-owned auto repair shop owners across the country to join our mission and we tripled participation while raising $33,000k. This year, we are 50 shops strong and have set a goal of $50K with 100% of their proceeds going to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Fund.
Dedicated to premier service, customer education, and building community, Star Motors’ motto is: “Quality, Integrity, Value”. Star Motors is a multiple award-winning auto repair facility, including the OC Register’s People’s Choice for Best Auto Repair 4 years in a row.
OC Register again turned to the people who know the Best of OC, the best to come up with their list of winners for the “2013 Best of OC, People’s Choice.” Dozens of retail, restaurant, and recreation spaces earned top spots in the six main categories: Arts & Entertainment, Food & Drink, Outdoors, Pets, Places, and Shopping & Services.
Naming the top three readers’ picks, plus offering a critic’s pick, they’ve created a guide to the city’s best and brightest.
Star Motors Best of OC AGAIN!
And guess what? For the FOURTH consecutive year Star Motors placed a WIN in the ‘Best Auto Repair’ Category!
Specializing in luxury and European “motorcars,” ASE master certified technicians have more than 50 years of combined factory-trained experience.
The facility offers several rewards programs, one being the “Elite Car Care Club.” This program offers members savings of over $300 on prepaid services.
Star Motor’s online blog provides information on automotive maintenance and repair and keeps clients updated with what is happening at the shop.
Claim to fame: Founded in 1985, Star Motors began as a Mercedes-Benz repair shop in Laguna Niguel, and then expanded to working on BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi and all other luxury vehicles All mechanics are ASE certified and have gone through extensive training – a minimum of 40 hours per year. “We can honestly say we have specialists for practically every make and model. Our technicians and service advisers are experts in European car diagnostics and are very good at figuring out complex problems,” said Emma Silvera, co-owner of Star Motors.
The facility’s new art gallery in its waiting room features works from local artists and occasionally brings people together for an evening of networking, wine tasting, appetizers and fun.
“We offer our clients fresh gourmet coffee and other refreshments in a clean, comfortable waiting area,” Silvera said. “If they need a ride somewhere, we have complimentary shuttle service and rental cars. We top it off with a hand carwash for every vehicle that comes in for a service or repair. We’re here to take care of people. It just so happens we’re fixing cars, too.” The staff offers complimentary loaner vehicles and towing as well.
Did you know? Star Motors is one of the few Green Station Certified auto-repair facilities in Orange County, according Silvera. “It’s important for us to do our part to protect the environment.”
Photos and videos of customers’ vehicles may be presented on the website to explain repair recommendations.
As an ASE-certified technician, owner Chris Knuth has been involved in every aspect of auto repair since 1996.
“I’ve taken all the positive things I’ve learned from all the places I’ve worked and blended them into something unique at Star Motors,” Knuth said. His master certified technicians have more than 50 years’ combined factory-trained experience.
The shop is open weekdays (Saturdays by appointment), doing everything except body work – air conditioning, transmission service, tire repair and alignment and strut and suspension work. Star Motors is certified by the state as a “green” station, employing many practices to reduce chemical waste and pollution, and it is certified female- friendly by AskPatty.com.
